Antenatal Appointments – Third Trimester

Once you reach the third trimester, you'll have more frequent antenatal appointments (particularly if it's your first pregnancy), to monitor your bump's growth and listen in to your baby's heartbeat. These appointments may be with your midwife (like mine) or your obstetrician, depending on the care you've been receiving and whether your pregnancy is deemed "low risk" or not. After your 28 week antenatal appointment, you'll be likely to have an appointment at 31, 34, 36, 38, 40 and 41 weeks' pregnant (if you get that far). These appointments usually only last about 20 minutes and this is usually what happens: (more…)

The dating scan – round 2

So I've told you about our first scan appointment, also known as the dating scan. We were very anxious at the scan, as I think most first-time parents probably are, but all went well and we were super happy. However, we were only 11 weeks pregnant, when we thought we were closer to 12 and the midwife struggled to get the images she wanted to check all was normal, as the little thing kept wriggling around. I'd like Dribble to be an informative blog for mums-to-be and parents, but I'd also like it to be somewhere that people can enjoy and share their experiences. After you've told your GP you're pregnant, if you are deemed low-risk (as I was), then you'll likely be told to make an appointment to meet your local Midwife. Being based in Chorlton, my health centre has a weekly session where the midwives from Wythenshawe Hospital run a clinic. I booked in to see the midwife about a week after I met with my GP, when I was about 7 weeks pregnant. This appointment was just a chance to meet a reassuring face, who talked me through the next 7 months and the appointments I would have. It was also a chance to ask all of those questions that were buzzing around in my head at the time, like "can I exercise?", "what pains are normal?" and "when will we be able to have our 1st scan?". The First Scan

The 6 and a half weeks between finding out I was pregnant and the first scan (also known as the "dating scan"), were the longest 6 and a half weeks of my life! Until the first scan, all you have to prove your pregnancy is a test and nausea! So that first scan is one of the most significant and anxious moments ever! I felt quite calm about it all until the few days leading up to it, when I felt sick, had headaches and some serious butterflies in my tummy! Luckily, my hubby is very laid-back and helps me not to worry...he's a positive thinker. I, on the other hand, am a worrier! So although I knew chances were that everything would be okay at this point, I was still incredibly anxious and full of "what-ifs". (more…)
